Fiel a su cita anual, Ken Vandermark edita una nueva grabación (la sexta ya) a nombre de su grupo más estable en el tiempo. Laboratorio de experimentación en directo todos los jueves en Empty Bottle de Chicago, resaltan en primer lugar tanto el magnífico nivel de sus integrantes como su trabajo conjunto.
Musicalmente resulta ser un avance respecto al trabajo del grupo. El resultado es una muy agradable sorpresa: lejos de mostrar un posible estancamiento creativo (máxime teniendo en cuenta que todo el repertorio es obra de su hiperactivo líder), su música sigue avanzando en los parámetros que han caracterizado sus últimas entregas. Partiendo del free-bop y la libre improvisación, con algún toque funk, muestra una obra magnífica, muy alejada ya de la inspiración del NRG Ensemble de Hal Russell y los elementos rockeros de sus primeros discos. Destacan los temas Six Of One, larga composición estructurada en diferentes partes, y el tiempo medio Strata.
Para los aficionados a las discografías completas seńalar que existe una edición limitada a 1500 ejemplares con el volumen 4 de la serie Free Jazz Classics, recogiendo temas en directo trabajando el repertorio del saxofonista RR Kirk. A pesar de un nivel más que notable, la ejecución de este repertorio en sus directos, empastado entre el resto de composiciones propias, supera el nivel de este bonus disc, el menos bueno de los cuatro volúmenes dedicados a los clásicos del Free Jazz. |
